Description:

Ames manufactured only 4,250 of these distinctive "mule ear" carbines between 1843 and 1846. "Wm. JENKS" is stamped on the top of the barrel parallel to the bore followed by "USN/RP/P/1845." Small letter inspection marks are on several components. The lock plate has the Ames three-line marking in the center and "Wm JENKS" is stamped on the rear. It has the later production rifled barrel and oval loading aperture. A sling ring is mounted on the lower tang. The stock has an oval cartouche on the left flat.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains traces of original brown finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The action retains traces of darkened original case colors. There is some minor pitting overall. The stock is also very good with crudely remarked cartouche, minor crack in the wrist, and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
