Manufactured in 1863. Letters of provenance from family members state it belonged to Civil War Major Adoniram J. Holmes who served as a Lieutenant in the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and later as a Major in the 9th Corps Army of Potomac and was captured in July of 1864 and held prisoner in several facilities including the infamous Andersonville. Highlights from his life after the war include serving as a State Representative and U.S. Congressman. Also includes a letter from the Boone County Bar Association regarding the death of Holmes' wife and copies of a military order for Holmes and bio for Holmes from the Loyal Legion of the U.S. Matching numbers on the barrel, frame, grip straps, wedge and cylinder pin. The period case contains a small powder flask, combination tool, .36 cal. Colt marked two cavity bullet mold and Eley cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Retains 40% bright original high polish blue and 60% original case colors mixed with smooth gray. The grip straps retain 80% original silver plating. The very fine grip has most of the original varnish remaining, shows some minor wear on the lower right side, and overall some minor pressure dents and handling marks. Mechanically very good. The case is good with a minor repair on the two front lid corners and a number of minor dents, dings and scratches on the exterior. The lid has been relined, and the remaining lining shows some absent areas, contact wear and stains. A nice Model 1862 with Civil War provenance.
