Description:

This is a scarce example of a factory documented nickel-plated original black powder frame Colt Single Action Army Revolver. The accompanying factory letter confirms the caliber, and finish with the barrel length and type of stocks not listed, which commonly referenced 7 1/2 inch barrel and walnut stocks, two characteristics found on this revolver. It was shipped to B. Kittridge Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio, in care of J.P. Lovell & Co. on November 24, 1874, as part of a 40 gun shipment. The frame has the two-line patent marking and the trigger guard has "45 CAL," all on the left side. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top, a small "A" inspection mark on the left side at the breech and small "P" and "A" inspection marks followed by "1448" on the underside ahead of the cylinder pin. The barrel has been factory renumbered to the gun with the partial frame serial number "0755" marked under the ejector rod housing. Colt reused a rejected barrel originally produced for a Cavalry model. (This is a known practice of Colt as they did not waste any rejected government parts!) The grip straps and cylinder are also numbered to the gun.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% plus original nickel finish with the balance mixed with smooth gray patina and flaking. The grip is fine with high edge wear on the lower right edge of butt flat, a minor chip missing near the bottom (left panel) and some minor handling marks. Most of the original varnish remains. Mechanically excellent. A solid example of a factory documented nickel-plated antique Single Action Army revolver that will add value to any Colt SAA collection.
