Description:

The S&W .357 Magnum double action revolver was manufactured on the N-target frame, and it was introduced in 1935 as the first American custom manufactured revolver built to individual specifications. This particular Registered Magnum, 2309, is one of only 32 manufactured with an 8 3/8 inch barrel. The accompanying factory letter states this revolver was shipped on May 26, 1937, to an individual, Robert Kruse, of Jersey City, New Jersey. Note that shipments to individual clients by the factory were and still are very rare, as opposed to the majority of production which to this day is still delivered to dealers and distributors. Also with the revolver is the original Registration certificate and the very rare certificate mailing tube. The certificate confirms the registration number, barrel length, sights (Partridge front and adjustable notch rear), finish and Jersey City delivery. Included as well are numerous S&W Historical Foundation document copies: the original order sheet confirming both Service and Magna grips and grip adaptor, rear sight requisition, order form with duplicate confirming the barrel length, S&W letter to Robert Kruse confirming that the order was received, S&W order and shipping invoice. Other documents show that William Kruse, a relative of Robert Kruse who only lived blocks away from each other, also ordered a Magnum (Reg. 2647). William was obviously impressed with Robert's gun! The revolver has standard S&W factory markings with “REG. 2309” stamped on the inside of the yoke, regular grips and S&W grip adaptor. The matching serial number is found on the butt, cylinder and ejector shroud. The assembly number “8340” is stamped on the yoke and crane. The factory Type II box has the illustration of a Magnum fitted with Magna stocks. This is the only 8 3/8 inch Registered Magnum complete with certificate, mailing tube and box known to exist, and the only example in this rare barrel length one will ever need to own. Provenance: Chad Gripp collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 99% original high polished blue finish showing a cylinder drag line and a few mild handling marks. The grips are excellent with crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. The box is very good showing lightly worn edges.
