Description:

Offered here is the finest known engraved example of a Smith & Wesson Registered .357 Magnum double action revolver. The chiseled sculpted steel engraving was performed by renowned Master Engraver Alvin White. A 1981 dated S&W letter written by factory historian Roy Jinks explains, "This revolver is an outstanding example of Alvin White's early engraving and may be one of the more profusely engraved handguns completed by him." We completely concur. White's signature is on the right side of the back strap under the grip panel: "ENG. BY-A.A.WHITE ATTLEBORO MASS." The revolver features near full coverage semi-relief scroll engraving. Even the sides of the barrel rib are engraved. The sides of the frame have spectacular deep-chiseled engraved mountain scenes with a wolf taking down a stag on the left side and a mountain lion protecting her cubs from an eagle on the right side. Each grip panel has a stunning sterling silver buffalo head overlay. The grip cap features exquisite scrollwork and a monogram. The grip straps feature deep checkering. This revolver is one of 1,518 Registered Magnums manufactured with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. The yoke is marked with the registration number: "REG. 319." Equipped with a King pinned red insert front sight and white outlined square notch adjustable rear sight. Matching serial numbers are found on the butt, ejector shroud and cylinder. The assembly number "4316" is found on the yoke and crane. The back of the right grip panel is marked "[illegible]/JULY 20 1956/46559/CHICAGO-34-INC." Two letters from renowned firearms author R.L. Wilson also identify this revolver as being engraved by Alvin White, and Wilson estimates that if the engraving had been done in 1983 would have cost "around $10,000." Two factory letters (one dated 1994 and the other dated 1996) state that the revolver was shipped on August 16, 1935, and delivered to Fishman's Sporting Goods of Springfield, Illinois, with a 6 1/2 inch barrel, registered number 319, blue finish, 1/10 Patridge front sight, square notch rear sight and grip adapter. Other documents (photocopies) related to this revolver include an order for one Registered Magnum set to S&W by Fishman's Sporting Goods, the S&W order form and a S&W letter notifying Fishman's Sporting Goods that the order for a Registered Magnum has been received. The first production firearms chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge, the Registered Magnum set a new standard in firepower and accuracy. Each Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum was built to the specifications of the buyer, then registered by number to the owner by Douglas Wesson himself, the then Vice President of Smith & Wesson. Provenance: Ray Cheely Collection, Chad Gripp Collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent as Alvin White embellished. The revolver retains 99% blue finish showing traces of a cylinder drag line. The grips are near new showing the slightest handling marks and highly attractive grain pattern and color. Mechanically excellent. A one-of-a-kind masterpiece by renowned Master Engraved Alvin White that would be the center piece to the most advanced S&W Registered Magnum revolver collections. A true piece of firearm art taken to the highest degree of perfection!
