Description:

This lot consists of a percussion pepperbox by Liverpool gunmaker William Dooley. The bar hammer, frame, trigger guard and butt cap feature a fine floral scroll engraving. The top of the hammer has a twisted rope style engraving along with a floral blossom. The upper tang is signed "DOOLEY/BANELAGH St/LIVERPOOL." "Crown/letter" proofs are present on the barrel cluster between the chambers. The metal surfaces are casehardened with the exception of the bright barrel face. The one-piece grip has a silver thumb escutcheon, and the butt cap has a compartment. The partitioned case has a paper Dooley label on the interior of the lid and contains a Sykes powder flask, ramrod/bore rod with attachment and percussion nipple wrench.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The pepperbox retains 85% plus original case colors overall. The grip is excellent with crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks, some worn lining and a loose partition wall. Most of the paper label remains. A solid example of a percussion pepperbox that will work well in the most advanced antique British firearm collections.
