The highest recorded serial number was at approximately 14,040, so this is a very late rifle. The side of the receiver is marked with the Nagoya Arsenal symbol over the series "1". The Chrysanthemum has been removed; however, most of the Kana characters remain. It has the original scope base that is fitted with a correct pattern late 2.5x sniper scope. The scope is marked "2.5 X 10," and the mount is stamped with serial number "13249". The rifle has an original matching numbered sniper bolt and matching cocking knob. The middle band has the undrilled block for the monopod (not included). It has the late production features such as the long staff rear sight without anti-aircraft wings and graduated from 4-22 (400-2200 meters) and no drain holes in front of the trigger guard. Has an original WWII stock with cupped sheet metal buttplate and handguard, original leather sling, cleaning rod and rubber eyecup.

Fine with 50% plus original blue finish with wear on the edges and high spots overall and finish loss on top of the receiver where the chrysanthemum was removed. The wood is very good showing extensive typical handling marks and numerous light pressure dents overall. Mechanically fine. The scope retains 90% plus of its black painted finish with general light finish loss overall. The optics are viewable but they show small specks inside. The rubber eyecup has split and is held on with a elastic string. A solid representative example of a late production Japanese type 97 sniper rifle.
