Description:

Manufactured around the 1850s-1870s with a bead front sight on a triangular base, hammer groove rear sight, "E. LEFAUCHEUX A PARIS" in Gothic script on the top of the barrel, "Mr Chapal" in coordinating script upside down on the left side of the barrel, the "revolver/LF" trademark and serial number at the breech on the right, matching numbers on most of the other components, floral scroll engraving throughout, smooth walnut grips, and a lanyard loop on the butt. The exact significance of the inscription is not documented, but the Chapal family in Bordeaux, France, were active in the French fur magnates. Their company was formed by Marien Cougny. In 1871, Jean Cougny, Marien Chapal, and Leonard Chapal took control of the firm. In the late 19th century it was run by two of Leonard's sons, Emile and Clement. The later was a member of the French Legion of Honor.

Rating Definition:

Fair with patches of bright original gold plating in the protected areas and mottled gray patina, light pitting on the balance, and minor scrapes and dings on the grips. Mechanically fine.
