Description:

This beautiful saber is unmarked aside from the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in a banner over the eagle crest on the langet. Interestingly, the finely sculpted hilt has attractive eagle heads on both the pommel and the forward swept upper quillion; they are commonly only found on the former. The pommel eagle's mouth is partially open and has a tongue, and the quillion eagle's beak is mostly closed. It was likely manufactured in the early 19th century, possibly in Britain; however, eagle-pommel sabers and swords were used through the Civil War era, sometimes as family heirlooms. The patterns on the band at the top of the grip match those on the bands for the suspension rings on the scabbard. Both the blade and the scabbard are also silver plated. The 30 inch blade has attractive niter blue, gold, and silver martial motifs.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with 50% of the original silver on the hilt which has some minor chips and faint cracks, over half the original finish on the blade which has some light pitting and a few nicks and strike marks on the edge, some chipping at the bottom of the grip at the eagle's throat, and a minor crack on the left. There is a little play in the fit. 40% of the original silver remains on the scabbard which has some dents and scratches. The silver and exposed brass have attractive aged patina throughout. Overall, a very attractive early American military/militia officer's saber
