Eli Whitney Jr. reorganized his family's business in 1863 as the Whitney Arms Co. and is known to have purchased condemned parts from the U.S. armories as well as other outside contractors and assembled the "good and serviceable arms" primarily for states and militia units.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall as period assembled and refinished by Whitney. 75% of the blue and casehardened finish remains. The balance has brown patina. There are minor marks and dings throughout, some minor chips in the fine stock, some light spotting, and a some imperfections in the stock that may explain its rejection. Mechanically excellent.
