Description:

This rifle is signed 'J. Derr' in scrip on top of the barrel. John Derr of the Oley Valley in Berks County, Pennsylvania, apprenticed under Henry Mauger and was active in the early 1800s. X is marked on the left at the breech. The 'JOSEPH GOLCHER' lock has floral patterns. It has the standard low profile blade and notch sights typical of Kentucky rifles. The patch box is unusual. It has a rounded finial, plain rectangular door, and an inlaid brass border. It is both plain and elegant. The stock has some molding line accents along the forend, Roman nose butt profile, and a toe plate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted. The barrel has a dark brown blend of patina and applied artificial brown finish, some minor pitting, dings, and some tool marks. The brass has attractive aged patina. The refinished stock has a minor tension crack at the left flat, attractive flame figure, some minor chips and slivers absent form the edges, and some expert repairs including a splice above the lock. Mechanically fine. This is a solid representative example by a well-known and respected maker.
