Unmarked Flintlock Pennsylvania Style "Smooth Rifle"

Model: Flintlock
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 50
Barrel: 43 1/4 octagon
Finish: brown
Grip:
Stock: maple
Item Views: 1717
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 51
Class: Antique
Description:

This gun is built like a rifle but has a smooth bore. Sometimes these are termed "smooth rifles" or "buck and ball guns." It is unmarked, but the stock is characteristic of the Lehigh region. It has traditional sights, a replacement lock marked "IB" inside, plain trigger, border engraved side plate, silver thumb plate, an oval silver plate on the cheekpiece engraved with a design that combines floral elements with the classic hunter's star, and a lightly engraved patch box with hidden release in the oval finial of the toe plate.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted. The barrel and lock have dark brown patina, mild oxidation, and some edge wear. The brass and silver have aged patina. The refinished stock has a spliced forend (starting at the front of the entry pipe), a filled wedge slot above the entry pipe, some minor cracks and chips, a few dings, traces of incised carving, and a repaired toe. Mechanically fine, but the mainspring is very stiff.
