Description:

The lock is signed "J.G.B." below the bolster. This same marking has been noted on other rifles by Jacob Briggle II (1831-1896) of Bedford, PA. Briggle (also spelled Breigle) was listed as a gunsmith when he joined the 138 Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. He briefly lived in Cedar Rapids, IA, after the war before relocating to Jasper County, MO, for the remainder of his life. It also features traditional blade and notch sights, double set triggers, engraving on most components aside from the barrel. The cheekpiece has a patriotic eagle inlay. Many of the aspects correctly match other known Briggle rifles including some of those pictured in "Bedford, Somerset and Fulton County Gunsmiths" by Whisker and Whisker.

Rating Definition:

Very good with dark brown patina, some tool marks, and mild oxidation/pitting on the shortened barrel and lock. The trigger plate has bright oxidation. The brass and German silver accents have aged patina and crisp designs. The stock has a refreshed finish, some minor chips and slivers absent, repaired crack visible in the wrist, another small hairline tension crack visible on the left flat, and various marks and scratches.
