Description:

Manufactured circa the 1850s-1870s in Ferlach, Austria, a small community with a vibrant and talented gunmaking heritage dating back to at least 1558. It has a bead front sight, "P: Polchinger in Ferlach" on top of the Damascus barrel rib, elaborate floral engraving with gold and silver inlaid accents and images of dogs, birds, a hunter in traditional attire, and deer; fine floral scroll carving on the wood along with an eagle on the right and an elk on the left, barrel release at the front of the trigger guard, horn grip extension, sling swivels on the bottom of the barrel and toe of the stock, and an elk among the floral carving between the cheekpiece and the steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Nearly all of the gold and silver inlay remains, and the Damascus twist patterns along the period refinished barrels remain distinct. Most of the other surfaces have a dark blend of original finish and brown patina. There is some minor oxidation and handling and storage marks. There is some cracking, a chunk and chip absent, and minor cracking in the horn trigger guard extension. The refinished wood is very good and has crisp checkering and carving and some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
