Description:

This Colt Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1875 and is chambered for the British 450 Boxer cartridge. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that confirms the caliber and the finish as "Blue". The letter states that this revolver was one of fifty shipped to Colt's London Agency on October 28, 1875. The revolver has small London "Crown/VP" and Crown/CP" proof and inspection marks stamped on the lower left side of the barrel and on the cylinder between each cylinder chamber. The revolver has early production features that include the first style ejector housing with barrel boss pin, "Bullseye' ejector rod head, and Colt 'Two-Date/Two-Line' patent marking on the left side of the fame. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the early 'script' address: "+ COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.+" with slanted crosses at either end of the address. "45 CAL/B" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. Colt "C" inspection marks are stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole, on the barrel below the ejector boss hole and on the rear face of the cylinder. The full serial number,"15147", is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "5147" is stamped on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector housing. All of the visible serial numbers match. The assembly number "202" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The hammer, frame and loading gate are color casehardened. The screw heads are niter blue, and the one-piece walnut grip has a high polish varnish finish. Colt manufactured 729 Single Action Army revolvers chambered for the .450 Boxer cartridge. Early production Single Action Army revolvers with British proofmarks are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 50% of the original blue and color casehardened finish. The blue components have a few minor scratches and scattered spots of age discoloration with high point wear. The casehardened components retain attractive fiery case colors. The serial numbers and Colt markings on the barrel, frame and trigger guard are crisp. The walnut grip is also in fine condition with numerous small dents and scratches. 70% of the original varnish finish remains. The action is crisp and functions fine. This is a scarce example of an early production commercial, British proofed Colt Single Action Army revolver with desirable 7 1/2 barrel.
