Remington only manufactured an estimate 5,000 Keene magazine rifles between 1880 and 1883. Production was limited due to competition with the Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles. This is a scarce example of a sporting rifle mounted with a multi-point checkered round knob pistol grip stock, sporting forend cap and part octagon barrel. The pistol grip stock and part octagon barrel were special order features, an uncommon set of features in today's collector market. It has a dovetailed blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The left rear side of the receiver is correctly marked "45/70", and the top of the tail piece is marked with the three line address and patent information. This example has no visible serial number. The buttplate has a compartment (cleaning rod not included).

Very good. The rifle retains nearly 40% original blue finish with the balance a mottled brown-gray patina mixed with a few scattered patches of minor pitting. The otherwise good, visibly reglued stock has some minor pressure dents and scratches with crisp checkering overall. The forend cap screw is missing. Mechanically excellent.
