This is an example of a Spanish American War Vintage Model 1896 service rifle that was subsequently arsenal refurbished. The receiver is marked "U.S. MODEL 1896 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY." This rifle has all the original features, like the butt-trap compartment, three piece cleaning rod and oiler in the but, curved, toe, longer handguard that extends over the receiver, 1896 style rear sight, and the two-strap upper barrel band. The stock is the correct finger groove model with a boxed "JSA/1898" cartouche.

Very fine overall with 80% plus blue finish, thinning on the receiver and high spots. The wood is in very fine condition, with visible cartouches but it has been varnished overall with some varnish getting on the barrel bands and edges of the metal. Mechanically excellent.
