Description:

Only an estimated 1,376 Trapdoor 20 gauge "forager" shotguns were manufactured in the early 1880s. They were designed for 20 gauge brass shotgun shells and were used by hunters and scouts primarily at western outposts in the late 19th century. Some were even used into the very early 20th century. There is an "SWP/1883" cartouche on the left side of the stock above the trigger. The lock has the correct two-click tumbler and standard Springfield markings. The breechblock is the Model 1879 type and has "1881" in italics on top and the special extractor. The rear of the chamber has the serial number "1264." It has a carbine buttplate and trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good with streaks of period refurbished blue finish on the barrel, traces of faded case colors, some faint pitting, tool marks, and bright, streaky oxidation. The stock is fine with legible cartouche and has a number of scratches, dents, and slight nicks at the buttplate juncture. Mechanically excellent. A solid representative example of a Trapdoor Forager Shotgun!
