These "Saw Handle Deringers" were manufactured in 1865-1888. The vast majority were plain, but this example has beautiful acanthus scroll and punch dot engraving, gold plating over a silver base layer, "Dowe" inscribed in script on the right side of the barrel, and pearl grips with a Gothic "D" inscribed and inlayed with enamel in the left panel. The top has the two-line address and patent marking, and the matching serial number is on the bottom of the barrel and on the grip frame (minus the "B").

Fine with strong traces of the original gold and nearly all of the underlying silver which has taken on dark, attractively aged patina. The engraving, inscription, and markings are crisp. The grips are also fine with minor handling marks and some extremely small visible nicks. Mechanically excellent.
