Description:

This is a beautiful example of a very rare and highly desirable Mauser Model 1896 pistol carbine with its original matching shoulder stock. This exact pistol is pictured on page 202/203 of the included book, "The Broomhandle Pistol 1896-1930" by Erickson and Pate. In the book, the serial number is incorrectly listed as "338"; however, if you look closely you can see it is "638," and the pistol comes with an affidavit from the consignor also stating that. Based on the noted serial numbers of all the various model of Mauser carbines, only a few hundred were ever manufactured by the Mauser factory. This pistol still retains its original 16 inch barrel, milled frame panels, large ring hammer, long extractor two lug firing pin and old style safety. One very noticeable feature of this pistol carbine is that it has an elongated chamber area. The top of the chamber area is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N". The left side of the barrel extension has the serial number, "683," which is also stamped on the left side of the frame and grip frame/stock lug. The right rear frame panel is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/OBERNDORF A. NECKAR," and there is a "crown/U" proof on top of the rear of the breech bolt. It has the distinctive 50-1000 meter rear sight and ramp front sight with a fixed bead on top. There are matching numbers on the frame, trigger assembly, hammer, breech bolt and barrel extension. The lower receiver extension has a one-piece carbine length buttstock that is approximately 15 inch long from the front of the lower receiver metal to the buttplate. The buttstock has a hard rubber buttplate with an intertwined "MW" on the end. This beautiful pistol has a rust blued finish on the major parts and components, and the extractor, trigger, bolt stop, rear sight elevator and safety lever all have a heat blued finish. The forend and buttstock are made of a smooth European walnut.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall with only minor high spot wear with a hint of blue fading on top of the stock lug area. The smaller parts retains 90% of their bright straw or nitre blued finish overall. The forend and buttstock are both also excellent showing only minor handling marks mixed with some minor/light scratches. Just a superb, extremely high condition, early Mauser Model 1896 Broomhandle carbine.
