Description:

According to the included letter from noted author Charles Kenyon, Jr., this item is an "independent house" production 1920 Luger Carbine. Sporting goods dealers and gunsmiths were known to build carbines as special order items, using 1920s vintage pistols combined with custom fabricated or DWM original carbine components, with Griffin & Howe noted as a source of these "house" carbines. Dovetailed brass bead front sight on a serrated ramp and a "1-3" graduated sliding notch rear sight on the barrel, which is "crown/N" proofed and numbered "58" to match the extension, with a "DWM" toggle group and a "MADE IN GERMANY" marked frame. A stock lug with two dwell positions for the mounting iron has been built up and machined on the back strap, with straw finished small parts, grip safety, checkered grips, and a nickel finished magazine with unnumbered hardwood base. The front of the frame has been milled out and drilled and tapped to accept a forearm iron and a checkered schnabel-tip forearm, which is fitted with a spring-loaded booster to help reset the barrel assembly during breech closure and a sling swivel. No shoulder stock with lot.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with 90% of the original blue finish, showing areas of spotting, bright edge wear, and scattered handling marks. Some components are unnumbered or mixed numbered, which is noted in the evaluation as being "proper to variation", and some clamp marks are present on the frame and forearm iron. The shoulder stock lug on the frame has had an additional slot added. The wood is fair, with some light dings and sharp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent.
