Description:

This is a very fine example of a DWM Model 1908 Bulgarian contract Luger pistol rig. There were reportedly 10,000 of these pistols ordered by Bulgaria in the 1908-10 time frame that were delivered in two different blocks of serial numbers. This specific pistol falls into the second block as it has the small letter "c" suffix serial number. Although produced in fairly large numbers, these are a very difficult example to obtain in unaltered condition as they saw heavy used in both WWI and WWII with most having been rebuilt at least once by the DWM factory and then again by the Russians after WWII. The chamber is marked with the DWM scroll monogram and Bulgarian Crest on top of the front toggle, while the lower rear grip strap of the frame has the distinctive Bulgarian lanyard loop. This crest consists of the Bulgarian Crown over a shield with a rampant lion inside. The right side of the barrel extension is stamped with a single "Bulgarian Rampant Lion" acceptance/proof mark with no other acceptance proofs anywhere. Both the extractor and lower safety lever area of the frame are marked in Cyrillic lettering "LOADED" and "FIRE" respectively. The full serial number "785c" is located on the front of the receiver and the underside of the barrel, with the partial serial number "85" stamped on the majority of the various other parts with some correctly unnumbered. It if fitted with a set of unnumbered, checkered walnut grips. It is fitted with two WWI pattern magazines with tin plated magazine bodies with unmarked wooden bases. This scarce desirable example also comes with an very desirable modified early Bulgarian Luger holster. The holster also includes a double magazine pouch, takedown tools and a four inch cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 80% plus of the original blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear with thinning on the side plate, frame rails, and grip straps that show a mixed brown patina type finish, with clear sharp markings. The smaller parts retain 50% of their straw colors overall. The grips are fine with nice, sharp, distinct checkering on both sides with only very minor handing marks. The modified holster is fair with a nice dark brown, oily colored leather exterior with most of the stitching remaining, and the belt loops and edge of the holster itself having been resewn. The small leather pocket inside the flap (where the tools are stored) shows some aging and wear through the pouch itself. A very scarce Bulgarian contract Luger that is actually well above the other examples by a long shot!
