Description:

This is a very fine example of an early Thompson Model 1921 submachine gun as produced by the Colt Firearms Company circa 1921/22. This specific submachine gun remains in its early original 1921 configuration and was sold to the Omaha Police Dept. and is so marked on the left side of the buttstock. This Thompson is identified by serial number in the numerical listing to Herigstad's "Colt Thompson Submachine Gun" as having been sent to the Omaha Chief of Police, John J. Pszanowski, on October 15, 1930, as part of a 10 gun shipment. The Thompson SMG is probably one of the most famous and easily recognized SMGs ever produced. It was used extensively during the prohibition and gangland warfare era by both U.S. law enforcement agencies and the Mafia, and later by the USMC and Army. These 1921 models had mediocre sales initially, with most being later upgraded to the 1928 configuration, however, this example remains in its original 1921 configuration. This specific weapon still retains all its early distinctive features; short 10 1/2 inch barrel with cooling fins, unmarked "Cutts" type compensator, vertical front pistol grip, detachable buttstock and adjustable Lyman marked ladder rear sight, graduated 100-600 meters, the original early style, large headed, recoil spring guide. The receiver is marked "MODEL OF 1921/NO 9661" with the rear of the receiver marked with the full "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/COLT CARTRIDGE/MANUFACTURED legend. The right side is marked with the block style "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION,/ NEW YORK U.S.A", markings along with the five lines of patent dates. The top of the receiver is marked with the original Auto-Ordnance "Bullet" logo with the early markings of "AUT-ORD-CO." inside the bullet logo. The lower receiver/trigger housing group is correctly numbered "9661". The left side of the buttstock has been boldly branded: "OMAHA/POLICE/DEPT." with the left side of the pistol grip also branded "OPD". The top of the receiver and rear underside of the trigger housing has been engraved with: "Omaha Police Dept". This SMG includes one original Seymour Products 20 round stick magazine. These were probably one of the best mass produced SMG ever manufactured.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear showing signs of police use and firing. The wood components are all in very fine condition with a nice medium brown walnut colored finish showing light wear and handling with the above noted Police markings. A very nice, early Thompson Model 1921 submachine gun. NOTE: This item is restricted as a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
