Description:

This is a late WWII production K98 sniper rifle manufactured by the Gustloff factory, that was never completed into a full-up sniper rifle. During the late days of the war the Gustloff factory was overrun leaving many of these long-side rail type 98K type sniper in an uncompleted state. This example has the correct enlarged receiver with machined flat on the left side with just the three scope base holes drilled in the receiver with no holes for the taper pins, indicating that it was never fitted up for a scope base. The receiver ring is marked with the "Eagle/749/bcd" the wartime code for the Gustloff-Werke and "45" for the year of manufacture. The top of the breech end of the barrel is stamped "avk Ck" and numbered "8481" on the left side indicating it was an early barrel installed on a late receiver or even assembled after the war ended. It is fitted with a mismatched bolt assembly from a Mauser rifle and it has unmarked stamped barrel bands and trigger guard with a milled floorplate. It has a standard wartime laminated stock and handguard with only a partial "eagle/H" on the right side, with a very faint, single "C" proof on the lower stock area. It is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate. The rifle is complete with an original cleaning rod and a k98 bayonet stamped "42 cve" with no scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Fine as assembled/uncompleted with 80% of the wartime finish remaining overall. The stock and handguard are both in fine condition having been restained. The bayonet is in good condition with oxidation erosion on the blade. A solid representative example of a very late WWII uncompleted bcd code, K98 long-side rail sniper rifle.
