These improved Model 1816 style muskets were manufactured under two contracts from 1822 to 1841. This example is marked "NEW/HAVEN/1836" on the tail of the lock, "U.S/crossed arrow and laurel/E. WHITNEY" at the center of the lock, and "1836" and "US/JM/P/P" on the barrel near the breech indicating it was manufactured as part of the 24,000 gun second contract. The left stock flat has an "SW" oval cartouche. The sight, bayonet stud, and other features are standard.
