Description:

Manufactured from 1876 to the 1880s, these large frame single action revolvers were also known as the "Army Revolver". This late model has a top strap, cylinder flutes and square butt. The front sight is a blade integral to the barrel, and the rear sight is a "V" notch just ahead of the hammer on the frame. The left side of the barrel has the one-line "Hopkins & Allen" address marking, and the top of the barrel has the one-line "Merwin Hulbert" address/patent information. The frame is marked "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1873", the designation for 44-40 caliber, on the left side. Most of the metal surfaces are adorned with factory engraved floral motifs. The left side of the frame has an engraved leaping deer scene inside a circular panel. The serial number is stamped on the butt, and the assembly number "399" appears on the barrel lug, cylinder and grip frame. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 60% original nickel finish with the balance a mottled gray patina. The grips are also fine showing some chipping and attractive color. Mechanically excellent.
