Description:

This is a much sought after example of an etched panel Colt Single Action Army revolver. The matching numbered barrel has the one-line address stamped on top, "44" on the underside to indicate caliber and the etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side. This etched barrel panel marking was officially replaced by the Colt factory in the early 120,000 serial number range with the much easier to produce and larger roll-stamping. The left side of the frame is marked with the three-line, three-patent dates followed by "A FRASER." Consignor research has placed ownership to one Alexander Fraser (1859-1922), the superintendent of bridges and buildings for the San Joaquin division of the Southern Pacific Railway in California. He had been with the railway for 40 years and lived in Los Angeles. Consignor research is included such as genealogy reports, period publications (copies) and photocopies of photographs of Fraser. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked "44 CF." The matching serial number is marked on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, barrel and cylinder. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with .44-40 caliber chambering and blue finish when it was shipped to Hartley & Graham of New York City on November 4, 1881, as part of a 50 gun shipment. The barrel length and type of stocks are not listed, which usually indicates 7 1/2 inches and walnut, respectively. Comes with an "ALEX FRASER" embossed floral tooled leather wallet and tooled leather holster rig with a maker monogram embossed at base of belt. (Writer believes this to be Hibbard Spencer and Bartlett Company.)

Rating Definition:

Good. The revolver has a smooth gray patina with traces of original blue finish and case colors (hammer) in the protected areas. There is some scattered minor pitting. The etched panel is very faint. The grip is very good with a deep scratch, moderate high edge wear and some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The holster rig is very good with a broken holster strap, replaced stitching and flex wear. The wallet is very fine.
