Description:

Manufactured in 1883 and engraved in a noted factory pattern. The factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .32 caliber, set trigger, checkered stock, sporting leaf sight, sling swivels and $2.50 factory engraving when it was received in the warehouse on April 10, 1883, and shipped on April 26. This engraving consists of light floral scrollwork on the receiver. The left side plate is engraved with a stag scene inside a circular panel. The barrel has blade and elevation adjustable sights and is marked with the two-line address/patent dates information and "32-CAL" on the top flat. The action has a single set trigger. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" flanked by floral flourishes. The cartridge elevator is marked "32 CAL." The forearm and straight grip stock are checkered. The crescent buttplate features a trapdoor (cleaning rod not included). Sling eyelets on the forend cap and underside of the buttstock hold a leather sling. The lower tang is marked "XXX 4736," the stock inlet is unmarked, and the buttplate is marked "5609."

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and magazine have a smooth dark artificial brown patina with traces of blue in the protected areas. The remaining metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina. There is some minor pitting. The refinished wood is very good with recut checkering and some scattered minor-moderate pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
