The included factory verification fax documents the features of Winchester Model 1892 serial number 56478 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 38, Barrel: Octagon, Trigger: Plain" and "Stock: Checkered stock Pistol Grip" and states that this rifle was shipped on "2-9-1898". The barrel has standard sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn sporting style rear sight. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a piano finish. The pistol grip is fitted with a black hard rubber factory cap. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped, "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. "38 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat at the breech. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped, "MODEl 1892./-WINCHESTER-/PAT.OCT.14. 1884." The serial number is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver.

Excellent. 95% plus original blue finish remains on the barrel, magazine and forearm cap. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish intact. The receiver shows some minor handling marks and some age spotting but retains 90% original high polish blue finish. The loading gate retains 85% original fire blue. The hammer, trigger and lever have 70% or more of the casehardened finish with strong colors in protected areas. The wood is excellent with 90% plus of the original piano finish which has dulled slightly on the contact points but the balance shows minimal wear. The checkering is sharp; wear is limited to a few scattered and very insignificant handling marks. This is an excellent example of both a scarce and highly desirable Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle that is absent in even the most advanced Winchester collections!
