Description:

Manufactured in the end of 1895 with the standard full octagon 24 inch barrel chambered in the desirable 44 W.C.F. cartridge. These were the favorite western saddle rifle that continued to be used well into the 1930s. The top of the barrel has the two-line Winchester factory address/King's improvement patent dates with "44 W.C.F." marked at the breech. The underside of the brass elevator is factory engraved in script "44 CAL". The upper tang is marked with the second pattern markings ("MODEL. 1873" with the decorative foliage) and fitted with a Winchester tang sight. The serial is marked on the rear end of the lower tang. The barrel is fitted with the Winchester half-nickel front sight and standard adjustable buckhorn sporting rear sight. The buttplate has the butt compartment (without the 4-piece cleaning rod).

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 60% plus original blued finish remaining overall with honest blue wear on the edges and high spots mixed with a light brown patina in various areas. 70% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The stock and forearm are very fine overall with 80% original varnish remaining with slightly more wear and flaking on the rear end of the forearm and showing minor/light handling marks and scratches overall from actual use. Mechanically excellent. The only noted issue is that the tang sight lead screw is lose and moves up when you change the sight settings.
