Description:

Special order Winchester Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter describes Model 1892 serial number 254961 as: "Rifle, 38 Caliber, 30 inch, Octagon barrel, Set trigger" and "Fancy checkered stock". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 22, 1905. The 30-inch octagon barrel has a rare Marbles reversible front sight with two different sight beads and "M.S.A. Co." rear sight with folding rear leaf and adjustable insert. A "M.S.A. Co." folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. In addition to the special order 30-inch barrel, the rifle is fitted with rare Winchester double set-triggers. The stock and forearm are highly figured fancy grade walnut with checkered panels and a high polish piano finish. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and bolt are blued and the hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The loading gate has a fire blue finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./- NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. -" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "38 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The oval Winchester "W/P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the caliber marking and on the top of the receiver. The serial number, "254961" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver. Extra length barrels are extremely rare on Winchester Model 1892 rifles and the combination of a 30-inch barrel, double set-triggers and checkered, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm make this rifle a one-of-a-kind piece.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 85% of the blue finish is present on the barrel, magazine and forearm cap. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish. 75% of the original blue is present on the sides and top of the receiver and the lower tang. The bottom of the receiver has faded to a silver patina. The loading gate has 80% of the original nitre blue finish intact. Casehardened components show vibrant flashes of original colors the balance an even toned silver patina. The crescent buttplate has a silver patina. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are both in fine condition and retain 70% of the original piano finish. The finish on the right side of the butt near the buttplate has dulled slightly. The finish on the stock wrist adjacent on the receiver and on the underside of the forearm shows moderate handling wear. This is a rare example of a rare Winchester Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle with extra length barrel and factory double set triggers. Writer cannot recall another example like this!
