Description:

Amos R. Fisher (1800-1898) worked in Winchester, Virginia, area initially and worked as a gun and lock smith in Cumberland, Maryland, into the 1880s. His obituary in 1898 notes that he was a gunsmith in Cumberland before and during the Civil War, served in the Mexican-American War, and also lived in Brunswick late in his life. A flintlock rifle by Amos Fisher, attributed to Amos R. Fisher's father, was estimated as dating to 1820-1840 and is pictured on page 95 of "Gunsmiths of Virginia" by Whisker with the similar carving on the left side of the buttstock, a nearly identical patch box, and similar trigger guard and triggers. This rifle has blade and u-notch sights, "A-R+Fischer" signed on top between the rear sight and the patent breech, a "G. GOULCHER" lock with pressed bird and scroll engraving, double set triggers, assorted engraved nickel-silver inlays including double acorn wedge plates and two moons flanking an ovoid inlay with hunter star cutout on the cheek rest, similar light engraving on the various brass accents, attractive sculpting along the forend, some wavy line accents, scrolls at the ramrod entry pipe and wrist, border carving along the bottom of the butt, wire inlay around the patch box, and the distinctive carving noted above on the left side behind the cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled brown patina, moderate pitting concentrated at the breech, and tool wear on the edges of the barrel; gray and brown patina and mild pitting on the lock, aged patinas on the brass and accents, general marks and scratches throughout, and mostly distinct designs and markings. The stock is also good and has chipping at the breech, a flash wear guard above the lock, a chip and crack at the bottom of the lock, some additional minor cracks, slivers absent at the forend tip, crisp carving, and general light scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
