Description:

31,098 Sharps New Model carbines were converted by the Sharps factory for use with the .50-70 Government cartridges in the late 1860s. 27,000 of these were relined with three-groove bores including this one. The buttstock was replaced during the refurbishment process, but the buttplate has the patch box cut. It has standard New Model 1859 markings, a replacement brass blade front sight, and a Lawrence patent notch and folding ladder rear sight. Many of these carbines were used in the Indian Wars on the Great Plains and in the Southwest.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 98% of the refurbished blue, niter blue, and 70% casehardened finish. There are minor marks and scratches, and the barrel marking is mostly gone. The wood is also very fine and has only minor surface scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. This is an outstanding example of the post-war conversion New Model carbines which are important pieces in U.S. martial arms history given they were used in both the Civil War and the Indian Wars.
