Description:

1,500 of these New Model 1859 rifles designed for use with the included sword bayonet were manufactured for a U.S. Army contract and 2,800 were manufactured for the U.S. Navy. The Sharps New Model series were among the most advanced and dependable firearms issued during the war and are one of a few Civil War designs that survived into the metallic cartridge era with little alterations. A variation of these rifles was even selected as the main weapon of the 1st and 2nd Regiments of U.S. Sharpshooters under Colonel Hiram Berdan. It has a German silver blade front sight, bayonet lug on the bottom, the standard manufacturer markings, a Lawrence patent notch and folding ladder rear sight, patch box, leather sling, sword bayonet marked "COLLINS &CO./HARTFORD CT/1861" and "83," leather scabbard, and a later production Rock Island Arsenal marked leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with traces of original finish blended with smooth brown patina, some slight spots of light oxidation, and general minor scratches and dings. The re-oiled wood is very good and has some minor dents and scrapes. The scabbard is fair and has absent stitching, some flaking, and crackling. The bayonet is fine and has mottled gray patina on the blade and aged patina on the handle. Mechanically excellent.
