Late production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver manufactured c. 1868. This revolver has a three-screw frame and eight inch barrel. The barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade and the hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. The barrel, cylinder and back strap have the Colt high polish commercial blue finish, the loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger guard is silver-plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a varnished, "piano" finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in one line. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene, "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" and "COLT'S PATENT NO." and "44 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard with an inverted "L". The full serial number "173222" is stamped on: (1) the bottom of the barrel lug, (2) frame, (3) trigger guard and (4) back strap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "3222". All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is in a Colt American style mahogany case with five compartments lined with navy blue velvet. The case contains: (1) 250 count tin of Ely percussion caps with yellow paper label on the top and side of the tin, (2) Model 1860 Army powder flask with fixed charger embossed on one side with crossed revolving rifles, crossed revolvers, "COLTS/PATENT" and cannon and stands of flags motif; the flask has a brown lacquer body and has the larger and longer charger required the Model 1860 Army, (3) L-shaped, combination screw-driver/nipple wrench, (4) blued steel, bow-leg, double cavity bullet mold stamped "COLT'S PATENT" on the top of the sprue cutter and "D" on the right block, and (5) assorted .44 round balls and conical bullets.

Very fine. The barrel has 80% of the original high polish blue finish remains with some finish loss on the left side below the rear sight and has some light pitting at the muzzle. The cylinder retains 30% of the blue finish mostly in the protected areas. Nearly all the roll-engraved naval battle scene is present and five of the six safety pins remains. There is light-moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples and cylinder shoulders. The back strap shows handling wear and has a smooth gray patina with some bright blue finish remaining in protected areas. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain at 90% of the color casehardened finish with strong case colors. Wear is limited to some flash pitting in the hammer well and on the sides of the hammer. The trigger guard retains traces of the delicate silver-plated finish in protected areas; the balance of the brass trigger guard has a good looking patina. The grip remains in very fine condition and retains 85% of the original varnished piano finish with some edge wear on the butt and minor handling marks. The refinished case exterior is in very good overall condition with a few scattered minor storage marks. The navy blue velvet lining has not faded and remains in fine condition; wear is limited to several compression marks from contact with the revolver cylinder and butt. The cap tin is empty a very good label on the top and a partial label on the side. The powder flask remains in very fine to excellent condition with close to 90% of the brown lacquer finish remains on the body and most of the fire blue finish present on the spring. The screw-driver/nipple wrench is in good condition with about 30% of the original blue finish. The bullet mold is in very fine condition and retains more than 85% of the military blue finish with scattered patches of age discoloration. This is a very fine example of a late production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with fine factory case and accessories.
