Description:

This excellent Colt 1860 Army revolver falls into the correct 167000-200614 range for the roughly 9,000 Richards conversions conducted in 1871-1878. It is theorized that these late conversions were all based on using up the left over 1860 percussion pistol that still remained at the Colt factory. This type of conversion was performed by supplying a new cylinder chambered for the Colt 44 CF cartridge, fitting it with a new cylinder ring in front of the recoil shield and installing a new loading gate on the frame with an internal spring. The loading lever has been replaced with an ejector housing on the right side of the barrel lug and a plug filling the slot in the barrel lug. The conversion breech plate has a firing pin and integral rear sight. The top of the barrel is marked "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-," and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT." The cylinder has the standard naval battle scene and "COLT'S PATENT NO. 0011". The complete matching serial number "200011" is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The assembly number "489" is located only on the loading gate, and the wedge is unnumbered. The grip appears to have a matching partial serial number handwritten in the back strap inlet. Includes a mid-20th century soft leather Brauer Bros. flap combination/holster with sherpa style lining.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 60% of the original blue finish remains with some light brown patina mixed with some spotting on the balance. 50% of the mottled casehardened finish remains overall. The case colors are particular vivid on the sides of the frame. The front strap has patches of original silver plating along the bow, aged "golden rod" patina on the exposed brass, and strong original silver plating on the sides under the grip. The grip is fine and has minimal handling and storage type marks, an old revarnished finish, some minor edge wear, and some slight chipping at the toe and junction with the back of the frame. Mechanically excellent. The holster is very good with minor storage wear. This is very high condition for a Colt Model 1860 Richards conversion revolver. These revolvers were manufactured alongside the Colt Single Action Army and many saw hard use on the western frontier making them highly desirable for collectors of Colt firearms, western Americana, and antique firearms.
