Manufactured for the U.S. military circa 1876-77 with a total production of approximately 5,934. The revolver is marked with the two line address/patent dates on the left side of the ejector housing flanked by elongated Maltese crosses. The right side of the ejector housing is marked "+SCHOFIELD'S PAT. APR. 22D 1873+". The butt is marked "U.S." along with the serial number "3481". The rear cylinder face is stamped with the matching serial and Ordnance sub-inspector's "W" and "P", which are also marked on the bottom flat of the ejector housing. The grips are smooth walnut and a visible Ordnance inspector's script initials cartouche on the left side. The matching serial number is stamped on the inside of the right panel. Many Schofield revolvers were issued to the 4th Cavalry which saw service in the Geronimo Campaign, the famous 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry comprised of the "Buffalo Soldiers" stationed in the American Southwest. As stated in the factory letter when the Model 3 Schofield was dropped from service they were purchased by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, and Francis Bannerman. Many were subsequently nickel plated and the barrel cut to 5 inches. It is estimated that 650 Second Model Schofields were sold as U.S. surplus. This example still features its original 7 inch barrel.

Retailer refinished with 90% plus nickel finish with some areas of smooth gray patina and some frosted areas. The trigger guard has a smooth gray patina. The hammer retains much of the original case colors. The grips are good with three small notches cut into the lower left edge. The markings are crisp and clear. A true Second Model Schofield sold at surplus on the civilian market in 1880-1881.
