Description:

This is one of several variations of Merwin, Hulbert & Co.'s large frame revolvers manufactured exclusively by Hopkins & Allen in the 1870s and 1880s. Several thousand are estimated to have been produced. This example has integral round blade and top strap notch sights, checkered grips, the two-line Hopkins & Allen address/patent dates on the left barrel side, "CALIBER/WINCHESTER 1873" on the left side of the frame, and "MERWIN HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY" on the right side of the frame. The serial number is on the butt, and the assembly number "4824" appears on the left side of the front strap under the grip, rear cylinder face and barrel lug. Provenance: Gillespie collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains nearly 95% original nickel finish showing some very scattered light flaking and a few moderate handling marks. The hammer and trigger guard retain 70% original case colors. The grips are fine with a repaired chip (right panel), a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
