This is a restored example of a Colt Single Action Army revolver that was manufactured in 1883 and factory engraved by Cuno A. Helfricht. The included factory letter states the revolver had a .44/40 caliber barrel, nickel finish and factory engraving when it was shipped to Wexell & De Gress in Mexico City, Mexico, on February 17, 1883, as part of an eight gun shipment (barrel length and type of stocks are not listed). The revolver has a full nickel finish and is fitted with a one-piece grip with nickel plated cap. The left side of the barrel has an acid etched panel: "COLT FRONTIER. SIX. SHOOTER." The top of the barrel has the one-line address surrounded by engraved wavy line and punch-dot borders. The left side of the frame has the Colt three line/three date patent marking in an engraved panel. "44 C.F." is on the left front trigger guard bow. "44" is on the bottom of the barrel. The full serial number is on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "280" is on the rear face of the cylinder (the ejector housing was not removed to view the barrel serial number). The loading gate has the assembly number "250". It has the late oval ejector rod head and hammer with bordered knurling on the spur. The engraving consists of Germanic scrollwork on a punch dot background with dot and line borders and star-burst highlights. The engraving is more detailed and extensive than is typically found on factory engraved Colt single actions. The engraving covers all of the components with the exception of the hammer and grip cap and is the equivalent of later Colt No. 1 coverage. With a modern walnut American style case with a bullet block holding 32 .44-40 cartridges. The case is nearly identical to period cases for Colt Single Action revolvers.

Very fine as professionally restored. This revolver retains 95% nickel finish which is slightly clouded in places. Nearly all of the acid etch barrel panel remains. The flawlessly executed engraving is extremely sharp. All of the markings are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. The grip is in very fine to excellent and has yellowed slightly with very minor hairline age cracks. The case is nearly new condition and complements the revolver.
