Description:

Anton/Antonin Vincent Lebeda (1797-1857) of Prague was completed his apprenticeship in 1813 and was manufacturing high end firearms for royalty by at least as early as the 1830s. His eldest son, also Anton/Antonin, took over management in 1850, and they were official gunmakers to the Austrian court from 1852 until 1857. The shop continued on under the management of his second son and closed in 1888. The firm was a leader in its day and focused much of their efforts on winning the favor of royal families by establishing a reputation for creating fine firearms that rivaled those of the best London and French gunmakers at generally lower costs. The style of the revolver fairly closely matches the Lefaucheux Model 1858 suggesting it was manufactured by the shop around the 1860s. It features fire blued raised sights on the fluted and geometrically engraved octagonal barrel, "LEBEDA" in a banner among the floral scroll engraving on the barrel lug, floral and crosshatch engraving with gilded backgrounds on the frame an trigger guard, straw finished cylinder with rope border designs, "2" and "1" on the rear face of the cylinder, and the Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Brunswick on the butt. Duke William of Brunswick was the ruler from 1830 to 1884. The same coat of arms along with a "crown/WW" monogram are known on other Lebeda firearms as are the use of contrasting gilded backgrounds which make the engraving designs "pop."

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with smooth coin finish gray with only minor spots of brown patina, strong niter blue on the sights, 80% plus straw colors on the cylinder, 90% plus original gold, some slight spotting and minor marks, and crisp designs and markings. The grips are fine and has some stabile tension cracks down the center, some slight shrinkage, and attractive aged tones. Mechanically excellent. Overall, this is a very fine revolver by one of the 19th century's finest gunmaking families and marked for the Duke of Brunswick or his court.
