Description:

This revolver incorporates British Patent No. 235 of 8 February 1858 and is believed to be one of only four double trigger Ball patent revolvers known. Octagonal sighted barrel engraved with a band of foliage at the muzzle, border and scroll engraved top strap, casehardened cylinder cut with a decorative roped band towards the front edge, border and scroll engraved frame stamped "H. BALL'S PATENT" on the left side and with removable inspection plate, bright hammer, automatic hammer safety, checkered figured walnut butt, border engraved rammer marked "PATENT" with separate head moving on a pyramidal rail, border and scroll engraved spurred trigger guard acting as the second cocking trigger, and border and scroll engraved butt cap. There are Birmingham proofmarks. Comes in the original fitted mahogany case lined with crimson velvet with accessories, including a fine Hawksley revolver flask, rare single cavity brass bullet mold and elongated nipple key/barrel stripping tool with ebonized handle. The exterior of the lid has a shaped brass escutcheon. It is believed that only seven Henry Ball handmade percussion revolvers of all types survive. Beyond the four double trigger and the solitary single action revolvers, there are also thought to be two surviving double action revolvers.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall. The revolver retains 98% of original finish throughout. The grip has sharp checkering, nice figure, and minor handling and storage marks. The mechanism is crisp. The case is very good with some fading to the lining. The accessories are in very good original condition. A fine example of a very rare and exquisitely made British percussion revolver.
