Description:

The Exeter 'Change (Exchange) building on the Strand in London contained a menagerie, a natural history collection, and shops many of which were owned and operated by wealthy eccentric Thomas Clark (1737-1816) who was a tenant from 1765 until his death. He is listed as a cutler in many sources and originally ran a "stick shop" selling canes and walking stick, but it evolved into "T. Clark's General Outfitting Warehouse" which retailed sword, pistols, and other items "officers, cadets, and writers" traveling to India and other parts of the British Empire and remained open at least until 1828 and likely until Exeter 'Change was demolished in 1829. It was likely run by his only son after his death. He is referred to as the "King of Exeter 'Change" in some Victorian Era periodicals. The gunmaker is not fully known, but the proofmarks suggest a Birmingham maker. This style was popular throughout the early 19th century. The pistols have low profile blade and notch sights, smoothbore Damascus barrels marked "EXETER=CHANGE=LONDON," on top and Birmingham proofs on the bottom, gold banded patent breeches with platinum touch hole liners, "CLARK" on the flat bevelled locks, traditional engraving, semi-waterproof pans, sliding safeties, frizzen spring rollers, plain triggers, silver wedge escutcheons and thumb plates, horn forend caps, and checkered bag shaped stocks. The mahogany case contains some tow, balls, patches, a key, powder flask, loading rod, and bullet mold.

Rating Definition:

Fine as professionally restored with nearly all of the finish remaining, distinct Damascus patterns, vibrant case colors, and minor handling and storage marks. The stock is very good and has crisp checkering, some slight scratches, and a chip by the toe. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine and has some corner separation and general storage wear. The accessories are fine.
