Description:

Manufactured circa 1850. The octagonal sighted barrel is signed "J. COLLINS. 115. REGENT ST. LONDON," engraved with a band of foliage at the muzzle and cut with multi-groove rifling. The casehardened reciprocating cylinder has the front face numbered from "1" to "6." Border and scroll-engraved casehardened frame, casehardened dolphin hammer with long checkered spur, figured finely checkered walnut grip, border and scroll-engraved blued trigger guard and butt cap, and silver escutcheon. There are London proofmarks. Comes in a fitted brass cornered oak case, almost certainly original, and lined in green baize. The accessories include an unusual burnished sporting socket bayonet in steel mounted black leather scabbard with detachable dark horn handle which allows it to be used as a dagger, a fine Sykes revolver flask, a Hawksley oil bottle, and a brass mounted loading rod with worm and interchangeable brass jag, and blued iron bullet mold with one stem formed as a ramrod. The lid of the case has a printed James Collins trade label, and the exterior of the case lid has a circular brass escutcheon. Revolvers are known that have attachable bayonets but in this instance the bayonet is made to fit something other than the revolver. It has been suggested that it may have been intended to fit a shaft for "pig sticking," a very popular sport in mid-19th century British India, or perhaps to fit a sporting rifle that formed a suite with this revolver. James Collins is recorded as owning a Gun & Pistol Repository at 12 Vigo Lane off Regent Street between 1825 and 1832, and later at 115 Regent Street between 1833 and 1854.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 97% of original finish throughout with some blued finish flaked on the trigger guard. The checkering on the grip remains sharp and crisp. The mechanism is crisp and the cylinder indexes perfectly. The bayonet remains very good with minor defects to the dark horn handle and some age related flaking to the black leather on the scabbard. The case is generally good with some handling and storage markings to the exterior. The baize lining remains good with some age related wear spots from the revolver and some fading. The label is slightly discolored and has a small tear to the bottom edge. A great example of a revolver with a complex gas-sealing mechanism marking the transition from pepperbox to the what is recognizable as a revolver today and presented in a highly unusual and possibly unique casing.
