Description:

This is a scarce example of an early U.S. Model 1903 cutaway rifle as produced by Remington Arms Company. These early rifles were used by armorers and company officials to visually show the all the various internal functions and mating surfaces of the various parts. These early cutaway rifles were usually manufactured using out of tolerance parts and/or early parts used in the set up of the various manufacturing machines. They all lacked the standard markings and inspection proofs just like this example. They are fairly scarce/rare as not more than 20-30 were ever produced with most being destroyed at the end of the production or given away as gifts after the war. This excellent example has 13 different cutaway areas, with most of them on the left side. They all show the internal mating/functional areas of the rifle. As noted this scarce example has no factory markings of proofmarks except for a single circled "P" proof on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. Some of the cutaway areas on this rifle are the chamber, internal areas of the magazine, the sear/striker rod engagement surfaces, the receiver recoil lug/stock area and the locking lugs on the bolt. It has the original early combination Remington dark green parkerized and blued finishes on the various parts. It is fitted with a second pattern, two bolt "S" style stock and handguard. It has all the correct milled components. This rare example comes from the Bruce Canfield collection and this actual rifle is shown on pages 238, 239, 264 in "U.S. Military Bolt Action Rifles" by Canfield, and again on pages 122 and 123 of "An Illustrated Guide to The '03 Springfield Service Rifle" by Canfield. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 98% of the original combination dark green parkerized and blued components. The stock and handguard are both also in very fine condition overall with a nice original dark brown matching color showing, some minor handling marks in various areas with both sides of the stock having light vise marks/imprints in the center section over the front stock bolt area. An exceptional example of a scarce/rare example of a Remington Arms M1903 bolt action cutaway rifle.
