Manufactured in May of 1942 and later arsenal upgraded to M1D Sniper configuration with a Weaver K4 scope. Acquired in lieu of the more standardized M84 scope, the K4 was "commercial off-the-shelf" equipment purchased in relatively limited numbers, and documentation on their purpose and use is scant. It's speculated that they may have wound up in Vietnam, and reports suggest that they may have been meant for the National Guard to use in event of an "urban unrest" scenario. Blade front and peep rear sights, with "DRC" and "S SI" drums, a five-prong flash hider, and a Springfield "3-52" barrel with integral scope base. The scope a Weaver K4 60-B, outfitted with see-through lens covers and the K4-particular M1D-pattern base with one inch bracket. Internal components include a Springfield bolt, trigger housing, hammer and operating rod. Smooth pistol grip stock with no visible cartouches, fitted with a green canvas sling, "MRT/11-62" cheekpiece (not screwed to stock), and a checkered steel buttplate. This M1D rifle was featured in author Bruce Canfield's "The M1 Garand Rifle" on page 534, and comes with a collection of CMP paperwork identifying it as a CMP Service Grade M1D certified to Canfield. Very fine, with 90% of the arsenal parkerized finish, showing mild handling and cycling wear overall. The stock shows a few light dings and scratches. Some oil staining and verdigris is showing around the grommets on the cheekpiece, with a hand-written "dope card" for the iron sights at 200 yards (starting range for a NRA High Power competition) on the right side. A few minor rubs and dings are visible on the scope body, with the optics crisp and the "post and wire" reticle solid. Mechanically excellent.
