Description:

This is an example of an arsenal refurbished WWII Colt M1911A1 that was originally manufactured in 1942, which is accompanied by a signed document stating it was issued to BG Harold W. Glattly, (MD). BG Glattly had a very sacred military career in that he was actually a physician assigned to the Philippines (on Bataan) and was captured by the Japanese in 1942. He was originally born in Mora, Minnesota and received his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa. He entered military service in 1926, and was eventually posted to Bataan in the Philippines (probably in the late 1930s,) at the rank of Lt. Col., as Chief Medical officer, Luzon Force. In 1942 the Philippines fell to the Japanese Imperial Army to include Bataan, which eventually resulted in the infamous "Bataan Death March". This was a horrific ordeal, reported by several sources as being between a 60 to 65 mile, forced march (by foot) of approximately 60 to 80 thousand, Filipino and American prisoners. These prisoners came from four areas; Saisaih Point, Bagac, Mariveles and Bataan, and were marched to Camp O'Donnell, Capas, Tarlac, (via San Fernando) and Pampanga collection points. During this horrific ordeal, thousands were, shot, stabbed and beaten to death. Here the prisoners were loaded onto trains and transferred to other Japanese held territories where the prisoners were forced to work in inhumane conditions with thousands dying until liberated by American Forces in 1945. Some sources have estimated the deaths during the march to Camp O'Donnell as being from 5,000 to 18,000 Filipino deaths and 500 to 650 American deaths. After being liberated in Japan after WWII, Lt. Col. Glattly returned to practicing medicine and became a pioneer in the development of prosthetics training during medical residency training, specifically in the area of "below the knee" amputations. Doctor Glattly published several reports, attended numerous lectures at various medical schools and within the VA system to promote this training approach. During his medical career in the Army he held numerous important posts, and also received from the Army two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. This pistol that he owned is an early 1942 production Colt with a replacement unnumbered Colt slide that is marked with the standard two-line, two-block Colt patent and address markings on the left side of the slide bisected by the Rampant Colt. The frame has the boxed "WB" cartouche of Waldemar Broberg. It has an all gray parkerized finish with the standard WWII production checkered parts. The grips are later production that have the reinforcing web on the back sides that are marked with mold numbers "10 and 1". It is fitted with a High Standard barrel marked "HS and P" on the right and left sides of the lug and comes with one original WWII magazine and a reproduction cardboard storage box. As noted this 1911A1 pistol is accompanied by a typed short affidavit on "One Star Stationary", from Robert W. Glattly; the son of BG Glattly's that this pistol was issued to the general .

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall with only edge and high spot wear. The markings are clear and sharp. The grips are also in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides with only minor handling marks on the sides.
