Description:

These later DWM Model 1913 Lugers are really an enigma within the Luger community and generally fall within a very narrow serial number range, generally accepted as being in the 71,000-72,000 range; however, with so few examples even seen it is very difficult to quantify that serial number range as being definitive. It is readily accepted; however, that the 1914 Commercial Lugers started with serial number in the 71,500 so this pistol was clearly produced before that model supporting that this is a very, very late, rare 1913 commercial Luger. The key aspect in determining this as a true Model 1913 commercial is that it is manufactured with the five digit commercial serial number, generally associated with this model, it has no stock lug, which indicates it's a pre-1914 model and it has the easily identifiable, old style 1906 pattern frame that utilized a grip safety. This 1913 model was produced specifically during this time frame to use up all the old style frames before DWM transitioned to the new style 1914 frame. The top of the chamber area is blank with the rear toggle having the DWM logo markings. The right side of the barrel extension is blank and the left side, underside of the barrel and both the breechblock and front toggle have a single "Crown/N" proofmark. It is correctly numbered as a commercial Luger, with the full five digit serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel, the front of the frame with the last four digits of the serial number stamped on the underside of the barrel extension, in front of and on top of the frame lug. The last two digits (38) of the serial number are stamped on the various parts in the correct commercial fashion. This example is correctly chambered in 9 mm Luger and it has the standard extractor and safety markings and was produced with a hold-open device, which would have been consistent with what you would find on a 1914 commercial that was probably also produced directly in this same time frame. This Luger is complete with two original unmarked commercial magazines that have the nickel plated magazine body and the wooden base. It is complete with an original early commercial leather holster that has the spare magazine pouch on the front, an additional single slot for a steel cleaning rod (included with this pistol) and has an early style tool pouch inside the flap that was made for a narrow take down/loading tool (not included) and a small pin-punch, also included with this Luger. The Luger overall exhibits an exceptional high polish rust blued finish with straw colors on the small parts and were all fitted with excellent checkered walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the original blued finish overall with edge and high spot wear with some slight thinning on the lower rear grip strap. The various small parts retain 98% of their straw colors. The grips are in near excellent condition with nice distinct checkering on both sides, with the right side showing some minor handling marks and light wear across the tops of the checkering. The left grip does have the typical small chip in the upper rear corner directly below the safety lever. The holster and spare magazine are both in excellent condition with a very nice medium brown color overall with minimal handling marks and nice tight stitching. This is really a super example of a very rare Grip Safety Model 1913 DWM Commercial Luger pistol, that certainly would be an exceptional addition of any high end Luger collection. As any 1913 Commercial is very rare!
