The Winchester letter describes this rifle, as: "Rifle, 40/65, Octagon barrel, Plain trigger" and "Plain pistol grip" and shipped on September 21, 1891. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting" front sight with colored bead and a buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center piece. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarsely knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "40-65 W.C.F." is roll-stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws. A plain pistol grip stock is a rarely seen special order feature on Winchester Model 1886 rifles.

Very fine. The barrel has 85% original blue finish with some very minor edge wear. The colored bead in the front sight blade is broken. The blue finish on the bottom of the magazine between the barrel band and the receiver is thin with some scattered light pitting and patches of age discoloration. There are traces of cold blue on some of the pitted areas. The bolt, extractor and trigger have 98% of the blue finish. 60% fire blue finish remains on the loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever retain 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The crescent buttplate has 70% of the faded case colors. The forearm and pistol grip stock are very good with 80% of the original finish. Wear is limited to a few relatively minor scratches and handling marks. This is a very fine example of a documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with scarce, special order, plain pistol grip stock.
