Manufactured in 1894. The accompanying Cody Firearms Museum letter describes this rifle as: "Rifle, 45/70 caliber, Barrel Shape: Octagon, Set trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip" and "Sights: Lyman rear sight". This rifle was shipped on October 8, 1894. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured 3X fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a high polish piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and a folding adjustable leaf rear sight marked "1873" at the top of the leaf and graduated to "10". A Lyman folding combination sight with coarse knurled post and hinged sight disk is mounted on the receiver tang. The rifle has a factory single set-trigger. The top barrel flat has the two-line address marking ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is on the top barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number are on the lower tang.

Exceptionally fine. The barrel and magazine have 95% plus of the blue finish; wear is limited to some minor finish loss at the muzzle and some traces of dark light pitting on the right side of the magazine near the cap. The bolt retains close to 95% blue finish. The loading gate retains 75% delicate nitre blue finish. The receiver and lever have 80% casehardened finish with strong case colors on the top and sides of the receiver. Nearly all of the case colors are present on the forearm cap and hammer. The crescent buttplate retains close to 95% strong casehardened finish. The wood is excellent with nearly 95% original piano finish. The fine checkering on the forearm and pistol grip remains sharp. This is an exceptional example of a scarce and highly desirable special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle.
