Manufactured in 1891. The accompanying factory letter (dated 2017) lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in 40-65 caliber, plain trigger, $2.50 factory engraving and checkered pistol grip stock when it was received in the warehouse on November 10, 1891. This engraving consists of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background, scallop borders and a stag scene inside a circular panel. Engraved accents are extended to the forend cap, lower tang and buttplate tang. The receiver engraving shares similar characteristics with the Winchester factory style no. 10 pattern. The barrel has dovetailed blade and elevation adjustable sights and is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "40-65 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-." The lower tang is marked with the two-line patent date information and the serial number. The barrel, magazine and bolt are blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The highly figured and checkered pistol grip stock has an ebony grip insert and crescent buttplate. The lower tang is marked "394 XXXX," the stock inlet is marked "394," and the buttplate is marked "394."

Very good. The barrel and magazine have a smooth brown patina, and the bolt retains 60% original blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain a few areas of silvered out original case colors. The refinished wood is fine showing a small hairline crack in the wrist, a small chip missing near the upper tang, a small patch of paint near the toe and some minor scratches and pressure dents. The re-cut checkering is sharp. Mechanically excellent.
